Feline Obstipation
Feline obstipation is similar to constipation, but must be treated differently. Whereas constipation is characterized by difficulty in eliminating waste, obstipation occurs when the cat’s bowels are blocked and it is unable to pass any waste at all. The cause of obstipation and the signs and symptoms of the disorder are usually the same as with constipation.
Feline Megacolon
A cat that suffers from chronic constipation or obstipation may ultimately develop Megacolon, which is a distended colon with poor movement. When this occurs, fecal matter remains in the colon and becomes continuously drier. As a result, the colon becomes filled with waste almost as hard as concrete.
Maintaining Colon Health Cat Style
Maintaining your cat’s colon health requires many of the same steps for maintaining the health of a human colon. Placing your cat on a high fiber diet, for example, will help prevent your cat from becoming constipated. Like humans, cats are unable to digest fiber. As the undigested fiber sits in your cat’s colon, it absorbs water and helps loosen the stool while also providing it with extra bulk.
Since cats tend to have more sensitive digestive systems than humans, however, it is important to implement a high fiber diet slowly. Changing your cat’s diet too abruptly can cause it to experience gas pain. Therefore, you should spend about five or seven days gradually modifying your cat’s diet.
Foods that can be added to your cat’s diet to increase its fiber intake include:
Canned pumpkin
Bran
Vegetable meal
Whole grains
Your cat may not want to eat any of these foods alone. Therefore, you will need to mix them in with your cat’s canned cat food. It is also important to ensure your cat drinks plenty of water. This is particularly important when increasing fiber consumption since the fiber will absorb water within your cat’s digestive system.

Are Doctors Telling you the Truth About Constipation
If you are expecting your doctor to tell you if you are constipated or not, his answer may be no if you have a bowel movement every three days. Discover what you need to know about whether you are constipated or not.

Most doctors don’t ask you if you are constipated. This is the first thing that they should ask you. They may think it is not important to have a bowel movement every day. In fact, some doctors think its ok when you have 2-3 bowel movements a week. They only get concerned when you only have one bowel movement in 5 or 7 days.
If you have one, two or more bowel movements a day, you may still be constipated. If you are leaving fecal matter along your colon walls, this is constipation. Constipation is when you don’t remove all of the fecal matter that is passing through your colon daily.
If you sit on the toilet and have to stay there over 5-10 minutes pushing, straining, or paining to have a bowel movement, then you are constipated. Straining to have a bowel movement, overtime, leads to hemorrhoids, varicose veins, or fissures. Your doctor needs to tell you that you are constipated, if you take more than 3 or 4 minutes to have a bowel movement.
Is your doctor telling you, if you eat three meals a day, then you should have three bowel movements each day? The first bowel movement should take place in the morning when you wake up or soon after you have had breakfast. Typical you should experience the urge for a bowel movement 20-30 minutes after you eat. The other bowel movements should be during the day and just before bedtime.
In her book, Healthy Digestion the Natural way, 2000, D. Lindsey Berkson defines constipation as,
“A healthy person should have at least one bowel movement a day. Medical textbooks state that individual variation goes from several times a day to several times a week. However, having worked with people for many years on improving their health, I would define constipation as not having one to several daily bowel movements, or having too long an intestinal-transit time.”
If you eat three meals a day and only have one or two bowel movements, then the second and third meal are backing up in your colon and staying there too long.
When your fecal matter stays too long in your colon, water and toxins are pulled out of the fecal matter and absorbed through your colon wall. This makes the fecal matter stiff and hard. Your colon will now have a hard time moving this hard fecal matter through its sections and out the rectum. The result is puffing and straining in the bathroom.
To complicate matters, if you are not eating enough fiber or drinking enough water, your fecal matter in the colon will be even harder and more difficult to move through your colon.
The thing to remember and use as a guide is that you need to have at least two bowel movements per day, if you are eating three meals a day. If you are having only one, then just start eating more fruits and vegetables to get the fiber. Just because your doctor tells you its ok if you have a bowel movement every three day, this does not make it ok. You need to take charge of your health and make sure you have bowel movements everyday.

How to Get Rid of Stomach and Bowel Problems
Many people suffer from unpleasant symptoms from their stomach, like: Constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, cramps, inflated stomach, acid eructation and pain related to such functional problems. -Eat enough, but not too much fat. The right amount of fat in your food will help giving your stomach content the right consistence. Most of the fat you consume should be a mix of fat from sources like olive oil, fish, rape, nuts, sunflowers and almonds.
-If you suffer from hard stool or constipation, taking for some days a couple tablespoons of linen seeds can help. Suspend the seeds in a glass of water and let it lie in the water some hours before stirring up the content of the glass and drinking it. You can blend a couple tablespoons of brand together with the linen seeds in a glass of water to get the effects of both these remedies at the same time.
-Do not eat too much, but neither too little, and eat at regular intervals. Four meals a day is usually optimal for most persons.
-Don’t eat in a hurry, and chew your food well before swallowing it.
-Get some physical exercise each day.
- Take some time each day to stress down. Meditation is a good method of achieving mental rest.
-Consume some products containing bacteria helping digestion. A healthy colon contains bacteria that help the end part of the digestion process. Yoghourt or other types of fermented milk will provide your colon with seeds for good bacteria. If you do not tolerate milk, or your colonic microbial content needs special attention, you can use products on the market that give a high supply of good bacteria seeds.
-If pure lifestyle measures are not enough to regulate your intestinal function, certain natural products you can find in the market may help. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) also known as spastic colon or colitis affects 15 – 20% of the population – predominantly women. The severity of IBS symptoms changes from person to person and from time to time. For some people it restricts their movements to such a degree that they have trouble making travel plans. Ibs Causes – What Causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
What causes irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS? Currently, the answer to that question is unknown, which disappoints the many people who suffer from this disorder. Theories have suggested that IBS might be a result of abnormal gastrointestinal tract movements, along with awareness of bodily functions and a change in the nervous system connections between the brain and the GI tract.
Gastroenteritis, or the stomach flu, can sometimes bring about irritable bowel syndrome. This could be because the flu causes irritation and inflammation to the stomach and intestines. IBS also has been said to be a result of allergies or sensitivities to foods- that theory however was never proven.
Symptoms can worsen at certain times- for example when a person is more stressed or going through a menstrual cycle, but IBS is not caused by these factors. Some symptoms commonly associated with IBS include gas and stomach bloating, constipation and diarrhea. Sometimes mucus can be passed from the rectum and the abdomen can become distended.
If the symptoms are severe or constant, a visit to the doctor is in order. There are other symptoms that are not associated with IBS but might be mistaken with the disorder. These include bloody stool or urine, vomiting, black or tarry stools, pain and severe diarrhea that interrupts sleep, and weight loss.

The first question on most people’s lips when they hear the term IBS is, what is it? The most important answer is that IBS is unlikely to be life-threatening. If you are in the unfortunate situation of experiencing pain in your digestive system, then you must see your medical practitioner/doctor to confirm that you do not have a serious condition i.e. the pain in your gut may be symptoms of something serious. This confirmation process will probably require a series of tests e.g. Barium Meal, Blood Tests to name but a few. In people who do not suffer IBS, the digestive system moves and contracts in a rhythmical fashion and this is how food is moved along the digestive tract. This rhythmical movement is called Peristalsis. In people who suffer IBS the Peristalsis movement is not rhythmical and the sufferer may undergo bouts of food moving through the digestive system quickly [diarrhoea] or slowly [constipation]. Either situation results in pain for the sufferer and a reduction in their quality of life.
Sometimes people who suffer IBS are told that it’s all in their head, that they are willing themselves to be ill. Anyone who has suffered IBS knows that they would not wish IBS on their worst enemy. They long for the day when they can do what they want when they want just like the people around them. Simple things like going out for the day, spending time with family and friends, being able to play their favourite sport without the worry of how well they will be feeling in ten minutes time would never be taken for granted again.
